Personal Work - Avon Falcons Football

I guess all good things have to come to an end. Last week I wrote about some personal work i've been doing the last couple months.

I've been following the local High School football during a magical ride that included an undefeated regular season and a trip to the State Semifinals. After falling behind 28-0, the much smaller Falcons showed some real fight and came up just short 35-27.

What a fun experience photographing the emotion all year. Thanks so much for allowing me the opportunity.

Personal Work - Senior Day 2009

Many photographers dedicate a portion of their time to working on "personal" projects that really inspire them, I've never really been that type of photographer until this Fall.

About a month and a half ago my, wife had asked me to take some pictures at the Homecoming game for our local High School Football team. Now keep in mind this was in the middle of our crazy busy season, the last thing I wanted to do was drag my camera out on the weekend and take pictures. Of course being the wonderful husband that I am :), I reluctantly took photos that day and to my surprise had an ABSOLUTE BLAST.

I've taken photos every game since and have truly LOVED it. The Falcons finished the regular season 10-0 and are headed to the State Playoffs.

I have been posting the images to the FJ GAYLOR Fan Page and have truly enjoyed watching many of the players become fans, tag themselves and make the images their FB profile pics.

I'm hoping the Falcons have two more wins left in the tank and become State Champions.

Canisius College, Buffalo, NY

After two and a half months on the road we have arrived at our last trip of the 2009 Fall Semester.

After two rainy days in Illinois early in the week, there was no question that the rainy weather was going to follow East to Western New York. So when we woke up Wednesday morning to rain, we were definitely not surprised.

We're hoping for some sun tomorrow in Buffalo at Canisius College to show us how gorgeous the campus looks this time of year.

Here's some from yesterday. Enjoy!!!

Fall is definitely here in the Northeast.

Well what can I say? I thought we had an in with Mother Nature, well it turns out we DON'T.

We've had a total of about 6 hours of sunshine all week in our only Northeast swing during peak foliage. Yesterday took the cake however at UCONN. What started off as a typical grey day, turned into about 7 or 8 hours of snow.

We woke up early this morning to the first frost of the season, but it was SUPER SUNNY, a great way to start our only week in the Northeast this semester. Unfortunately Mother Nature did not want to cooperate and the clouds rolled in just before 9:00 am and NEVER left, another GREY, GREY day, but successful nonetheless at SUNY Cortland.

After a couple days near Dallas, we traveled 275 miles Southeast to the Lamar University in TROPICAL Beaumont, TX. 81 degrees at 6 am with about 900% humidity. The weather played games with us all day. Each time we went outside after being inside for any period of time we had to wait about five minutes for our lenses to defog due ti the humidity.

After a grey day of shooting at Navarro on Monday and the forecast for more of the same Tuesday, we called in a favor to our good friend Mother Nature for some sun.

Unfortunately we ran into some weather yesterday, no rain, but grey, grey skies that kind of hampered some of outside shooting. Hopefully the clouds blow east and there's some blue skies for Tuesday.

Fall is definitely here in New England. We got our first taste of it yesterday while at WPI in Worcester, MA.. Temperatures struggling to get into the 50's, grey skies, and some color on the trees, my kind of weather, with the exception of the grey skies. University of Florida, Gainesville, FL

This semester is officially in full swing, we've been nonstop since August 27th with trips to TX, IN, back to TX, IA, NJ and most recently FL.

We started the week in New Jersey, spent a couple days working at Monmouth University, hopped on a plane Tuesday night from Newark to Orlando and finally a 3 am arrival in Gainesville and the University of Florida.

This is our third visit to Gainesville in the last couple years. We love going here, it's kind of self explanatory (geography, size, athletics, great people, etc., etc.)

Well anyway budget woes allowed only one day of shooting at UF, YIKES!!!!!! Talk about a sprint. Try getting as much as you possibly can in a ten hour day on a campus on ~50,000 students.. Not the easiest thing in the world, but we hope we were able to deliver.

Some FUN Personal Work

One of the major downsides to this whole Higher Ed. Photography thing is all the travel in the Spring. Each spring I usually miss my son's first half dozen baseball games, and it kills me.

Well last night the playoffs started and my wife kindly reminded me that she didn't have any pictures of Zach this season. So off I went to the game with camera in tow.

What a great time, I always love shooting baseball...

PS... Can you guess which one is my not so little anymore Zach?

A Successful Spring Semester

After a torrid seven weeks of nonstop travel and shooting, we are back in the studio slowly digging out from under several terabytes of raw files taken this spring semester.

Spring semester is always a sprint due to Weather, Easter, Spring Break, finals, etc.. and this Spring was no different. The weather was a bear everywhere we went, even California, go figure.

We've gotten positive feedback from all our clients this time around with the exception of a few who haven't received their pictures yet. So hopefully the trend continues with positive feedback, which would make for a nice summer.

If you've got a few minutes to burn, we'd love for you to take a look at some of our favorite spring 2009 images

Thanks so much to ALL our Spring clients, we hope to see you again in the coming semesters.

MCLA, North Adams, MA

After four straight days of rain last week, Friday was absolutely gorgeous!!!!! 80 and sunny up in the Northwest corner of Massachusetts at MCLA.

As I mentioned in previous posts, we find Spring such a tough time to shoot because of a few major variables that we have no control over. In addition to dodging the April showers, finding leaves on trees is also a road block that we frequently run into when shooting up north. Even though it may be 80 and sunny, when there's no leaves on the trees, it makes it almost impossible to get campus beauty shots (much better to capture during late summer or fall) without awful dead looking trees.

It was a long week in the car and on location, this week we'll see more of the same as we start off in Worcester, MA for a day, drive 400 miles to Buffalo for a day, fly to JFK, drive to Long Island for the tail end of the week and then start it all over the next week. :)

Suffolk University, Boston, MA

Wednesday we found ourselves at Suffolk University in the heart of Downtown Boston.

It's always fun to go to and work with the people at Suffolk. It's a bit of a departure from the way we typically work. As you can see from the images they look a bit different than what we normally shoot. (then again, maybe it's just me)

Suffolk is an urban school whose campus is essentially the city of Boston without a traditional campus. So Donald and Denise essentially run us ragged around the city to capture city scenes that depict Boston.

Other than the great city of Boston, we love it when they take care of us with food from Cosi :)

SUNY New Paltz, New Paltz, NY

On our last day off until Mid May, we found ourselves at SUNY New Paltz yesterday afternoon. We weren't scheduled to work at New Paltz until the beginning of May, but in a call to Rachel Reuben, I asked her if it was alright for us to come down for a few hours to capture some labs and art classes to make sure we got them prior to our visit in a few weeks.

The reason I asked her was simple: We are going to be back at New Paltz during the last week of classes and in prior experience, most, if not all science labs and art classes pack up a couple weeks before the end of the semester. Now we could go back in a few weeks and "set up" some fake labs and art classes, but as the majority of you know, that's not how we do it. :)

Rachel was flexible enough to allow us to come down for a few hours. She told me that the Fine Arts were a big part of the New Paltz scene, and she wasn't lying. We've been to a ton of schools, big and small and I can honestly say that aside from Indiana University's Herron School of Art, we have yet to see one as thriving as SUNY New Paltz.

It was definitely kind of weird to focus on only a couple specifics, as we usually roll through campus in two days capturing anything and everything that moves to build image libraries.

I can't wait to go back when there's some green and the weather's a bit nicer, great little campus..

Hopefully the New Paltz community enjoys them.

Main Website Updated for '09

Just wanted to send out a quick post letting everyone know that our main site FJ GAYLOR Photography has been updated with new images from the fall 2008 semester.

It's always a chore redoing the website. After shooting what seems like a zillion images over a 12 or 13 week whirlwind, narrowing down our favorites is really tough. Also letting go of the older images is quite difficult. That's what Flickr's for right?

Things are shaping up nicely for '09 so hopefully we'll have the same problem come July.

So if you're into "real student life images", head on over to FJGAYLOR.com and let us know what you think.

Decisions, Decisions

Click on the image to see larger.

It's that time of year again, time to add fresh images to the main website, www.fjgaylor.com .. It is quite a chore to go through several thousand images and pick the ones that are worthy of going on the website.

After picking out several hundred images that we like, there is another round of editing and tagging into categories. Some of the categories are buildings, details, inside campus life, outside campus life, dorms, athletics, faculty, classroom, Faculty-Student Interaction, and more.

Then there's the process of getting rid of most of the images that are currently on the site. This is extremely painful, as most are really only about 6-7 months old...

It's strange the amount of athletcis images in the fall as opposed to the spring. We seem to have a bunch of football images this fall.

There are six images above that I have to whittle down to one to put on the website.

Would appreciate everyone's thoughts, don't hold back, I've got pretty thick skin.
