A Wonderful Way To Kick off The Holiday Season

This past Saturday, I had the honor of being the "best man" at my younger brother's wedding in Bridgewater, MA... I had never been to a "white wedding" but this was just plain awesome.. We left about noon on Friday for the rehearsal and returned home late Sunday afternoon, it snowed the ENTIRE time, it was just plain gorgeous, the entire thing.

They obviously had hired a "real wedding photographer", but of course I had to bring my camera. I've never shot a wedding before, mainly because I'm away from home way too much as it is, and I was afraid that I'd enjoy it too much.. I was right, it was extremely fun.. I might have to add this to my repertoie to combat the uncertainty of this economic downturn.

Congrats to Jeff and Danielle:

Eckerd College Holiday Card 2008

HERE IT IS

Each year, for the last three anyway, I've always enjoyed the Holiday Card put out by Casey Paquet and his team at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg.

I did a little googling the other day but nothing came up, and naturally because of my adult ADD, I kind of just forgot about it. About an hour ago I got an email from Casey letting me know the Card was out. Thanks so much Casey..

Once again Eckerd didn't disappoint, they seem to set the bar every year. Be sure to check out the Bloopers at the end (you have to watch the whole card for the blooper links to show)

Great stuff, looks like a pretty cool place to work.

Thanks for the reminder Casey!!!

Annual Family Holiday Cards

When I first starting this photography thing for a living, my wife had this crazy idea of taking pictures of the kids for Christmas cards. OK, sounds fun right, yeah it is until your significant other calls you from her parents'house in Texas on Saturday afternoon, making sure I had the picture printed and ready to mail for Monday!!!!

What picture? Hadn't even crossed my mind.

We were scheduled to pick her up at JFK Staurday evening, so we fired to Manhattan hoping to find something that inspired the three of us. No luck in the creative department. Well a long story short, we got to Manhattan at about five, it was dark and of course I didn't bring a flash.

So, we managed to get it done, but definitely not one of my favorites.

Here it is along with the last four years, man they grow up fast!!

I'm gonna take the next couple of weeks to enjoy a LOT of REAL time with family and friends as far away from the computer as I possibly can, and recharge for a VERY EXCITING START TO 2009

Student Newspaper Articles - FJ GAYLOR

Another Full Week on the Road, Northwestern University

A young reporter from the Daily Northwestern, Northwestern University's student newspaper contacted me late last week about a story she was wrinting on Admissions Marketing. My gut told me to say thanks but no thanks (figured they were going to lambaste the entire process). Then I said to myself "screw it, I've got nothing to hide", let's go with it."

Here's the article if you'd like to read.

Overall I was pleased with the article, but like anything there were some parts that were a bit off, in my opinion.. I also have learned that you've got to have a filter when speaking with media. (I obviously do not have one) I can definitely get a bit excited when talking about what I do, and need to hone the verbage a bit. But when your'e PASSIONATE about something, emotions fire you up and can sometimes take over.

The reporter, told me she got the idea to write the story by seeing all our Northwestern Images on our Blog. I guess it's a win, because the target market (students) were interested in the style of our work.

Also on a side note, we were featured in an article in the Hilldale College student paper as
well.

Emmanuel College, Franklin Springs, GA - Day Two

Here's a bunch from our second day at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA... What a great couple of days of shooting. The people down South continue to amaze me, their hospitality, kindness, accents, etc.. Northerners like me should take a few notes... :)

If I sound a bit punchy, It's because we just finished up about 12 weeks on the road, and are buried in images to process..

Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA - Day Two

After a gray day on Monday, Tuesday was anything but, not a cloud in the sky. Good day of shooting at Cornell College, capped off with some homemade pizza at the President's house.

We just arrived in Bloomington, Illinois after taking the scenic route through the Western part of the state. On the way we stopped at a pizza place in Rushville, IL, they were closed but very nice people.

Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA - Day One

This morning we found ourselves in Iowa for the second time in a couple weeks. This time in the Cedar Rapids area at Cornell College. Once again Mother Nature was not really cooperating, gray skies the majority of the day with the exception of a few breaks that lasted all on a few minutes. Supposedly there will be a bunch of sun on Tuesday. Let's hope so.

Here's a bunch from the day.

Here's a bunch from Lebanon Valley College, a few miles down the road from Hershey, PA.

LVC's main goal for the shoot was to capture outside fall scenes. The weather, like most of this fall was less than stellar. Lots of Gray clouds with some pockets of blue. We could of just set up a bunch of kids in bookstore gear and set 'em all up, but that's not how we roll...

Northwestern University, Evanston, IL - Umbrella Edition

After a couple days of gray skies in Iowa earlier in the week, Wednesday was no different in Evanston at Northwestern University. The forecast called for rain all day. After a coffee at the Norris Center Starbucks, and $50 bucks for a couple of umbrellas we hit the ground running... What a day, this was our third time at Northwestern in the last year and a half, and it really never disappoints. It is a GREAT place. Here's a bunch from our umbrella collection.

A 200 Mile Ride with The iPhone

We finished up Thursday at Navarro College in Corsicana, TX and headed 200 miles North to Wichita Falls, TX for a couple days at Midwestern State University.

Along the ride we realized how good Texas has been to us, in a twenty or thirty mile span we passed three schools that we have done business with in the last year and a half, a couple billboards from Midwestern State featuring some of our images from the past. That was pretty cool to see especially 1800 miles away from home.

I was also able to be completely connected the entire way thanks to my iPhone, tweeting on twitter, watching a couple YouTube videos, checking email, etc... Thankfully Fred was driving.

To cap the evening we stopped at The Whataburger in Wichita Falls for a high calorie dinner.

We are finally home after a long week on the road.. The first three days of the week the weather was fair at best, BUT the last two days at Hillsdale College in South Central Michigan were just plain GORGEOUS.. I don't think you could of ordered any better weather, not a cloud in the sky.

It was homecoming at Hillsdale on Saturday, and the main attraction was the Football Game. Keep in mind we are in no way sports photographers, but I think we were able to tell a story with the images below.

We would like to thank EVERYONE at Hillsdale for making us feel at home and so welcome, a real class act..

After a LOOONG week in California, we are headed home on the redeye to JFK...

Santa Clara University Soccer

Had a GREAT time today at Santa Clara University in the Bay Area.

We had the chance to attend a men's soccer game this evening (athletics is not something we excel at) The light conditions on the field were not great, I was able to find ONE image that interested me of the action. I then focused on the AWESOME crowd... The student section was WILD.. (The strong smell of adult beverages may have had something to do with it)

Tried to capture the emotion of the fans.

Well another week on the road is underway. Three Schools in three states this time around with the first two days in Detroit at Lawrence Tech.

There was about five minutes of sunshine all today, which made for an awful lot of indoor shooting. View Larger Map

I can't believe that summer's over.. It's been nice to not have to travel the last three months.. It was nice while it lasted.

Today kicks off our whirlwind fall semester of shooting with a sweet DIRECT flight to Indianapolis for the week. Three days of shooting at familiar places, IUPUI and Marian College and back home for the Labor day weekend.

Should be a fun week as there is a "Indy Higher Ed TweetUP" with Brad Ward, Jamie Hastings-Smith from Marian, and hopefully Jeremy Wilburn will make the trip from IL as well.. Good times for sure and PLENTY of Jimmy John's subs.

A Long Day in Manhattan

Here's a bunch from a FUN shoot in Manhattan for St. John's University.

I have to tell this was an extremely fun shoot for us, we had a great time runnin' all over the city from The Met, Central Park, Up and Down Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, etc., etc..

The only problem with yesterday was that there weren't enough kids, we had the SAME five kids with us all day. It was definitely different from the way we're used to shooting, it was setup to an extent. (summer, not on campus) We just dropped them out on Fifth Avenue and let them go..

After about ten miles of walking my feet were KILLING me. It was extremely fast paced, as you can see from the images, we used the wide angle and fisheye most of the day...

Here's two links FJ GAYLOR Manhattan and one that may or may not work on all browsers, our Mobile Me Gallery

It continues, the emotions, highs and lows like a ride at Six Flags... This is crazy.. People think we're absolutely out of our minds, and I have to agree..

Brad and I have been at it for over thirteen hours waiting for the 3g iPhone launch.. I was fortunate enough to get in and out all activated with a new phone in 8 minutes, Brad is still trying to get things sorted out, we have tried everything imaginable. No Dice, Yet anyways

It has been a ride for sure.. Not gonna lie to you all, it is pretty sweet getting VIP treatment at the Apple Store, that pretty much never happens...

Head on over to 26 Days Without to see a blow by blow of the last 13 hours, if you've got nothing better to do..

Is This a Missed Opportunity for Higher Ed?

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about Dorm Room Photos and since then the traffic to the blog has seen a steady increase in keyword activity surrounded by the search term "dorm"

I have seen this in the past, as there are trickles of visitors throughout the year coming from "dorm" but nothing like the traffic during the summer, year over year..

It brings me back to a couple conversations I had with students last fall while shooting their rooms. They were both from incoming Freshman. "I think we saw your blog when looking for specs on how to set up our dorm rooms, sizes, setups, etc..."

Very interesting, are Schools missing out on this opportunity? Why are all these students landing on my page and not the schools' site? I'm sure it has something to do with effective keywording... Everyone should head to Kyle James' site for some indepth SEO education to get you started...

Just something to chew on..

Now off to the airport to meet up with Brad for tomorrow's iPhone launch!!!

Dorm Room Photos - Choices

We have begun the arduous process of updating our site with fresh images from the past semester.. Better get moving, as the Fall Semester is right around the corner.. Arggh..

We have a total of 800gb of images to go through.. As of know I have gone through four days of shooting and have come up with 106 images that I like as possibles for the site.. We worked about 40 days this spring, so you do the math, I'm looking at upwards of a 1,000 possibles, obviously some major overkill... Not that having too much is a bad thing..

Here are three images of the same dorm room from Lynn University, As higher ed professionals and students (if there are any out there) I would love to hear what you think about them.. Which one do you like best? Or if you think they all stink, that's fine too..

Thanks so much

Summer Session - St. John's University, Queens, NY

Here’s some from Tuesday at St. John’s University in Queens.

I was a bit concerned going into today’s shoot, simply because my camera hadn’t left the bag since May 7th. It took a bit to get going, but had a productive day shooting some undergrad stuff and later on in the afternoon focusing on Graduate material.

Summer time shoots are always a huge challenge for me. As all of you know the activity on campus is sporadic at best.

It’s the time of year that the admissions office recruits kids from their office to play the part (arrgggggghhhhhhh)... This drives me absolutely NUTS.....

Curious to see what eveyone’s take on summer shoots...

Seamless Integration with Flickr and AirTight Interactive

After a BUSY Spring Semester, it's been real nice the last couple of weeks to not hop on an airplane and go to work!!

This is also the time of year, we usually like to go through our zillions of images and redo our website.. This is an extremely cumbersome task, and Web Designer, I'm not!

In comes Flickr, each and every night this spring, I tried to post here and also mirror the images on Flickr in a set titled Spring 2008

Next up, FlickrEdit a nifty little tool that allows you to make a backup of your Flickr account and save them as JPG's anywhere you choose.

Then using Adobe Lightroom and Airtight's Simpleviewer and Postcard Viewer, I was able to throw together a couple of neat little presentations of images from this past Spring..

Here they are: Simpleviewer and Postcard Viewer (postcard takes a bit to load, better with less than 170 images, I imagine)

Start to Finish: 15 minutes, pretty cool..

Now back to banging my head on a redesign, or keep it the same with all FRESH images from this Spring.. FJ GAYLOR Photography

I'd love to hear your thoughts

After 10 crazy weeks of travel that included stops in 12 states plus Canada, the majority of our Spring busy season is now behind us.

We finished up today on the Connecticut shore at the University of Bridgeport (50 minutes from home!!)

Here's a bunch from the shoot today during finals week.. I know there are many out there that think shooting during finals week is a bad idea, but let me tell you they are flat out WRONG.. Sure you're not gonna get any academic shots because of test taking, but there are tons and tons of other opportunities that are abound, IF you know what you're doing and want "AUTHENTIC" images..

Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, NJ Campus

We are on the final push of our busy spring semester schedule. The great thing is we are pretty local this last week. Today we were at Farleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ, a gorgeous bucolic setting full of GREEN, everywhere.

This is the last week of classes at FDU which makes for some tough shooting conditions when it comes to "academic" stuff as most classes are just reviewing for exams, and the science labs and art classes are pretty much wrapped up for the year.

On the other hand the outdoor shooting was great, FDU - Madison is pretty small and not a ton of activity, but there were definitely pockets of activity which made for some good stuff.

We are headed out to FDU again in the morning, this time at the other campus in Hackensack, NJ a much more urban setting with at least twice as many students, so should be a good time..

SUNY Cortland, Cortland, NY

We spent the last couple of days in Central New York at SUNY-Cortland. Unfortunately Mother Nature was not very cooperative, Monday was a complete washout and Tuesday was frigid.. So needless to say there were not a lot of outdoor spring photography to be had.

In our travels I did notice something that I really hadn't thought of or really noticed before while shooting: THE SCORES OF DIFFERENT LOGOS OR GEAR WORN BY STUDENTS, there didn't seem to be any consistency with the identity at Cortland among the students. I know that administration is working on this and trying to streamline to a single brand..

I thought it was pretty cool to see all the different gear and logos.. Under Armour, Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Champion, etc.,etc..

To keep it short, in going along with my question on Monday about authenticity: Controlling the Image or message is going to be an uphill struggle with these kids now and in years to come.

I think it's a perfect example of the "customer" telling everyone, "we're gonna tell you what the brand is, and you (administration) better embrace it..

There definitely has to be a strong central brand image of any school but wondering what your thoughts are on this licensing thing?

Question

When are we going to stop trying to 'control the message' and embrace authenticity?

Santa Clara University - Day Two

Another long week complete.

I can't believe it's already the end of April and almost the end of our busy spring shooting season, it has definitely been a whirlwind. This week found us in Dallas, TX and then most recently in sunny Santa Clara, CA...

Just arrived home from a 100 mile drive from Boston off a JetBlue Redeye from San Jose. Time to crash pretty soon.

Here are some from yesterday at Santa Clara University... We've been to a BUNCH of campuses all over the country, and IMHO Santa Clara has been the most beautiful we've seen (sorry University of Miami)... Unfortunately you'll have to take my word for it. I am exhausted and looking through the roughly 10,000 images just isn't gonna happen this morning..

I was reminded of an article in the NY TIMES a while back about blogging until you drop. Not that this blog has the readership that the biggies have, but there is definitely a niche following that returns day in and day out that come to expect updates. We hope to not disappoint..

Off to sleep, hope everyone has a wonderful weekend..

Texas Wesleyan University, Fort Worth, TX - Day One

Back for another crazy week criss-crossing the country. Today we found ourselves in Fort Worth, Texas at Texas Wesleyan University.

The weather in Texas was wonderful and not stifling as feared. It was hot, about 93, but a wonderful breeze that we took full advantage of while working the Rams Baseball game this evening.

Heres a bunch from before and during the game. Enjoy..

Another day in the sun at Texas Wesleyan Tuesday and then off to Silicon Valley for Wednesday and Thursday.

Another Week of Admissions Photography

Just a few from St. John's University in Queens from Friday. What a week it was, it was real nice to finish up Friday afternoon and get home and relax, for a few hours anyway.

Spent a large part of Saturday night processing files that have to be delivered real soon.

We are in Fort Worth, TX the next couple of days, gonna be hot and sticky.

I can tell the busy travel season is starting to wear a bit, I ran out of the house and forgot to pack SOCKS for an entire week on the road. Will definitely have to make time Monday night to get some clean socks!!!

Almost the WEEKEND

Well the end to this LOOONNG week is in sight, we will be off to our fifth school this week in a few hours.

Today was spent in and around the city of Boston at Suffolk University. This is truly the definition of an urban campus, From Historic Brownstones to Modern Hi-Rises scattered throughout the Boston Common area.

Heres some stats for the week which started out Sunday afternoon with a Drive to Providence to catch a plane to Cleveland and then rent a car and drive to Detroit.(No seats available to Detroit under $2,000, which would've definitely been a deal breaker, if I had tried to pass that off as travel expense to the client) It will end tomorrow at about 9:00 pm when finally home from Queens, NY.

Here goes:

Hartford - Providence -110 miles driving
Providence - Cleveland -636 miles in the air
Cleveland - Detroit -175 miles driving
Detroit - LaGuardia, NY -618 miles in the air
LaGuardia, NY - West Long Branch, NJ -75 miles driving
West Long Branch, NJ - Hartford -174 miles driving
Hartford, CT - Storrs, CT -52 miles driving
Storrs, CT - Hartford, CT -52 miles driving
Hartford, CT - Boston -110 miles driving
Boston - Hartford, CT -110 miles driving
Hartford - Queens, NY -145 miles driving
Queens, NY - Hartford -145 miles driving

Total Flying Miles - 1,254
Total Driving Miles - 1,148

Hours of SLEEP - Not nearly enough
Number of Sudafed Taken - Way too many

Time Spent on the road with my DAD - PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend

UCONN, Storrs, CT

Here's a bunch from The University of Connecticut, home of my beloved Huskies.

I can't even begin to explain how nice it was to be home, and not a hotel room at 8:00 pm. I was tempted to just go home and crash on the couch and turn in for a nice comfy sleep in my own bed. Yeah right, like that's going to happen! We are so behind in processing and delivering files to clients, that's the downside to being so darn busy. Got a ton of processing done by 10:30 and ready to go to bed until I realized, I hadn't downloaded 14 GB's worth of cards from the shoot.. So here it is 1:30 and WAY past a healthy bedtime... Have to be on the road by 5:30 for a shoot in Boston.. Well hope you enjoy the shots from UCONN..

Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ

Day Two this week found us on the ground a mile away from the gorgeous New Jersey shore at Monmouth University.

A wonderful Spring day but the trees were lacking leaves, which by the way is a major pet peeve of mine. I'll have to let Mother Nature know. There's nothing like a great Spring Day with kids having fun outside in the sun, but all you can see are leafless trees, it drives your eye right to the horrible dead looking branches.

Anyway, we're finally home, it felt like we were gone for a month, even though it was only 48 hours or so... I've been fighting a NAGGING cold, that doesn't want to go away.

Off to bed and up and at 'em again tomorrow. This time at UCONN!!!! It is going to feel so nice only having to drive 40 minutes to work and back home at a reasonable hour..

By the way gotta love the Arizona Wildcats shirt on the girl on the elliptical!

Marygrove College, Detroit, MI

Here's some from our day at Marygrove College in Detroit, MI..

After waking up with a HORRIBLE sore throat that couldn't have come at a worse time (5 days, 5 schools, 5 states) we headed out to Marygrove for a great day of shooting in this urban Detroit campus.

We just arrived in New Jersey for a day of shooting at Monmouth University. Hopefully the Sudafed will kick today.

St. John's University, Queens, NY

Here's a bunch from St. John's University in Queens from Friday.

St. John's is a WONDERFUL place, probably the most diverse campus we've worked at, and one of the busiest... Always a ton of activity going on..

We just arrived in Detroit, MI for a shoot at tiny Marygrove College.. We will be here all day Monday and then catch a 9:30 flight to LaGuardia..

Is it the Weekend Yet?

What a week, our plane out of Chicago to Hartford last night was delayed for about two hours due to the weather in the midwest, we arrived home at 1:30, just a few hours ago. Headed out the door now to St. John's University in Queens, NY right now ( 3 hour ride)..

Despite the weather in Bloomington, IL yesterday we had a great day of shooting at Illinois Wesleyan University, Unfortunately the clock is not on our side, hence a short blog post today.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!!

Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, IL - Day One

We are currently in Bloomington, Illinois for a two day shoot at Illinois Wesleyan University. This shoot's focus is on INDOOR stuff - classrooms, labs, faculty-student interaction, residential life and other things that happen inside away from the plush grounds that are just non-existent this time of year up North.. So the monsoon forecast for tomorrow should have little impact on the assignment, except that we forgot our umbrellas!!

We have been going pretty strong the last month or so, but it just hit me that we are going to be EXTREMELY busy the next few weeks, We fly out of Chicago Thursday night, arrive home after midnight, take a quick nap and off to St. John's University in Queens for Friday. Then the next Ten Business days at 7 Schools in Seven different states, starting Monday in Michigan then NJ, CT, MA, NY, TX, and CA... Yikes!! Anyone want a job processing files???

Well here's a few from IWU today..

Enjoy

The University of Florida and the "Gator Nation"

Three days of fun in the sun, it doesn't get much better than that!!

Yesterday was spent at The University of Florida in Gainesville, lots of fun.. Talk about a rat race though, yikes!!

It's definitely the biggest and busiest campus we've been on. You could spend an entire month shooting and not cover everyhting.

Belhaven College, Jackson, MS - Day Two

Well once again, I am suffering from INSOMNIA... About an hour ago we received a "robocall" from Delta saying our flight out of Jackson, MS was cancelled and we were put on a later flight (not due to leave Jackson until 3:55 PM tomorrow, OUCH, Not gonna work)

Well fast forward about a half hour (on hold), we were able to secure a flight out of nearby Meridian, MS (92 miles away) for 6:00 am!!! That's right 92 miles away and a 6:00 am flight.. MUST BE ON THE ROAD BY 3:30 to make it ontime..

Back to the insomnia, this thing is going to be timestamped somewhere around midnight, central time..

Well anyway here are some from Beautiful Belhaven College in Jackson, MS....

Belhaven College, Jackson, MS - Day One

Here's a bunch from our first day at Lovely, Little Belhaven College in Jackson, MS. I've never been to Mississippi, and I have to admit, I was PLEASANTLY surprised. Belhaven is nestled in a great little neighborhood with a bunch of charm.

One more day in Jackson, and then home for the weekend and off to Florida again, all next week.

Red River College - Winnipeg, MB - Day One

Well, the spring semester busy season is off to a great start, minus the travel woes. After an extremely busy fall semester of travel with NO delays or travel mishaps, the Spring 2008 semester has started off a bit rocky. After getting detained in Canadian Immigration for a tense hour (Canadian Customs cam real close to sending us home) and a mechanical in Toronto we finally arrived in Winnipeg four and half hours before our first day of work at Red River College. So after a quick nap and shower, we arrived on campus for a wonderful day of shooting. One more day at Red River College and back home for a few days and then to Mississippi next week.

"Fat Envelope Frenzy" - A Must Read

Joie Jager-Hyman, a former Assistant Director of Admissions at Dartmouth and current Doctoral Candidate at Harvard, has released Fat Envelope Frenzyjust in time for the busy Admissions season. Jager-Hyman who also blogs at Crucial Minutia chronicled the lives of five High School students from different backgrounds with the same goal in mind: Admission into The Ivy League.

Jager-Hyman does a great job in telling these kids stories. I picked the book up Friday in anticipation of our Sunday flight to Winnipeg.. I started reading on the plane in Hartford and didn't put it down until it was finished. I thoroughly enjoyed this easy read, and ended up wanting to know more about all these kids..

Back To the Real World

After spending the last couple days on location in Miami, yesterday was back to the real world as we had a shoot in Manhattan at Metropolitan College of New York.

We left West Palm Beach, FL yesterday morning at 9:30, flew to Newburgh, NY, arrived at 12:30 and were on location in Manhattan seventy miles away at 2:00 pm. We managed to squeeze in our fifth or sixth greasy fast-food meal of the week on the ride to SOHO.

This is nothing against Metropolitan College but, there are very few places like the University of Miami, especially in the winter time.
